Panchakarma, which includes five major procedures, is meant to purify the whole body by eliminating the accumulated toxins from it.

The name of the treatment process is ‘Panchkarma’. The name is so carelessly used that it’s
curative effects have been totally sidelined.

Man is a complex being who is constantly perceiving his environment to strike a balance between
himself and nature. As both the internal and external environments are in a flux man is constantly
fighting a battle where the complex mechanism of his mind and it’s association with his sense
organs is displaying an illusory image of peace and solitude. I call it illusory because, through his
perceptions, he assumes and expects a particular result from his actions and when they do not
manifest, his illusory world of peace and solitude is destroyed. Man thus finds himself back in the
same old game of perception and finding peace and solitude.

During this intellectual battle man finds himself in a state of imbalance as his misunderstood
perceptions challenge the very core of his belief system. In an effort to bring harmony, man gets
into various inharmonious activities and indiscipline which totally disrespects the biological clock as
well as his ability to consume food. These inharmonious activities create a lot of toxins and man
begins to suffer illnesses.

To relieve man of his suffering Ayurveda introduced a system of detoxifying and rejuvenating the
body and mind to strike a cordial balance between the two. These groups of various therapies is
called Panchakarma.

Panchakarma literally means five acts of detoxification.

  1. Vamanam

    This is therapeutically induced vomiting. In short, It has the following benefits;

    1. It clears the excess mucous accumulation in the oesophagus and upper digestive track.
    2. It relieves the accumulated stress, stored in the form of emotions in the heart and region of the
    3. It activates hunger, enhances diaphragmatic movement, leading to proper digestion. (due to
accumulated stress, the abdomen becomes taut and the rectum gets sucked in. As a
psychosomatic response to stress, this reverses apana vaayu and stagnates samana vaayu.
Further, huge amount of lactic acid is released along with other acidic juices and kills the
appetite. But due to emotional turbulence one indulges in emotional eating with wrong food
combinations to stimulate the palette. This release accumulated stress temporarily. Therefore a
lot of undigested matter and accumulated mucous remains in the upper digestive track which is
responsible for ailments like acid regurgitation, acid reflux, regurgitation of food, belching,
      bronchial congestion, migraine etc.)

It is a therapeutically induced purgation. This is done to;

  1. Release abdominal distension and evacuate accumulated gases
  2. Balances the tridosha ( three humors – vpk )
  3. Activates the function of apana vaayu
  4. Keeps the person grounded and restores mental and emotional balance. (the abdomen is a site for psychosomatic expressions connected with fear, anxiety, restlessness. When Virechanam is introduced it removes these blockages from these channels and reverses the energy- apana vaayu in right direction. So a person feels calm, composed and finds himself in enjoying emotional stability.)

    improves water metabolism.

outcome of consuming food where acids, alkali and food are mixed in harmony where food is
consumed in a pleasant state of mind. Rasa is useful to nourish every tissue of the body.

      and muscles
